John-Skelly, Licensed Professional Counselor, Fresh Roots Family Counseling

Education & Certification

After much prayer and study, I am currently in the practicum/internship phase of my graduate work, I pursue completion of my degree and full licensure as both a Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor.

I am a Northwest Arkansas native and my wife of 30+ years, Melissa, and I live on a small farm in Lowell. We have raised three (now adult) children. The Stephens family is multicultural, as our middle son and youngest daughter are adopted from Vietnam and China, respectfully. I bring real-life perspective and first-hand knowledge to the unique dynamics, joys, and challenges faced by adoptive families.

“Love is unselfishly choosing for another’s highest good.”

– C.S. Lewis

After graduating from the University of Arkansas—Fayetteville in 1989, my career has been dedicated to various positions within the insurance industry, accepting in 2000 the opportunity to serve as General Manager for a locally based mutual insurance company. My many years of business experience and career responsibilities allow me to connect well with individuals and families searching for that elusive work-life balance.
I began to realize a calling into a counseling career during a time of life when the responsibilities of raising children and caring for aging parents collided. During this time, I was caring for my father throughout his extended battle with Parkinson’s disease, all the while searching for a healthy mix of how to attend to the responsibilities of being a father, husband, friend, employee, and churchgoer. During a time of exhaustion and pause after my father’s passing in 2016, I made the commitment to follow God’s calling into the counseling profession by enrolling in the Counseling program at John Brown University.

I look forward to putting a life-time of experience and a fresh set of therapeutic skills to work as we collectively discover solutions to help you reach your counseling goals.
